Jaimie Davis, creator of Indigenous wearable art, was recognized as the inaugural Best Solopreneur at the 2021 Small Business BC Awards. In an unprecedented year for small business, the new award recognizes an individual who started a solo business, “wore multiple hats” and navigated challenges while growing the business on their own. Davis, an entrepreneur from the Gitxsan and Nisga’a Nations, built her business, Jada Creations, on her original jewelry designs.

Originally from Gitlaxt’aamiks, Davis moved to Terrace at the age of 10. As a Nisga’a and Gitxsan person, she experienced racism. In her adult life, her work as an artist has been a way to heal.

Jaimie is a cedar weaver, jewelry designer, sculptor, and painter who owns Jada Creations. Her original jewelry designs are made of cedar bark she harvests locally and sustainably on traditional laxyip (territory). Another material she works with often is Abalone shell. In all of her creations and especially through wearable art, Jaimie is passionate in sharing a piece of her culture with the world.

Jaimie Davis (Xbiyee), Gitxsan/Nisga’a, receives the $500 honourary mention award.

Two talented artists from the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art are the latest recipients of the Northwest Community College (now Coast Mountain College) President’s Art Award.

Jaimie Davis (Xbiyee), Gitxsan/Nisga’a, receives the $500 honourary mention award for her two-piece Nisga’a Bentwood box design on wood panels. She chose the traditional design as a nod to the ancestors and the lessons they teach us.

​

“This recognition is an incredible honor,” said Davis. “I believe my ancestors were watching over me as I created this piece for them. In turn, they showed me they are listening and watching us as we work hard to keep our culture alive.”
